Become a Badass

Susan Donnelly at Bigfoot 200

You’re a badass.

You’re the person that can do that impossible race and you know it.

You feel strong, confident, and willing to dare that epic race course.

At least that’s who you want to be.

You see tons of badass runners in videos and photos. In theory, that could be you but you feel worlds away from being like them and no way to get there. You’re just normal you.

So are you stuck there?

No.

The big obstacle standing between you and Badass You isn’t buckles, big name race finishes, your training plan, your average pace, or even an awesome video.

It’s not having all your friends think you’re a badass, winning a race, or looking the part.

It’s so much simpler than that.

It’s in your head - it’s how you see yourself.

That’s all you need to change to feel the same strong, calm confidence.

So if you wanted to change the way you see yourself, what could you do?

Commit to start seeing yourself as a badass. Make that deal with yourself.

Decide you’re 100% capable of that race you want to run, even if you’ve never done it before. You can do the training to get your body ready.

Believe you can do whatever you put your mind to. You’ll figure it out.

List all the impossible-looking things you’ve already done. Badasses own their accomplishments.

Decide you’re stronger than a DNF. You may not want one but it’s nothing to fear.

Cultivate a high opinion of yourself. Because you’re amazing.

Acknowledge the fear and show up ready to run your race anyway, like the badass you are.

Keep going until you cross the finish line. Badasses don’t quit on themselves.

Make your own decisions for your own reasons. You run distances most other people wouldn’t, so your decisions won’t be like theirs either.

Drop your excuses and be honest with yourself about anything that’s holding you back. Time to move past it.

Be honest also about your strengths. You have them, so use them to your advantage.

Enjoy how good it feels knowing you’re a badass. It’s just who you are.

You could also skip a few things.

You don’t need to convince anyone you’re a badass. What anyone else thinks is irrelevant. This is between you and You.

You don’t need permission to be a badass. You just decide to.

You don’t need to wait until you finish the race or anything else. You’re a badass today, as you are.

You don’t need to be perfect either. Badasses, by definition, get it done no matter what.

You can tell others you’re a badass or keep that superpower to yourself. Either way…you know.

Even if you only did one of these things consistently, you’d no longer wish you were a badass - you’d have become one.

You’d have done it for yourself. It wouldn’t depend on what anyone else thought of you.

And you couldn’t lose it. If you momentarily forgot you were a badass, you know how to get back there again.

Because you were badass enough to decide to see yourself that way.
