How to Get the Results You Want

People ask for my secrets and here’s one of the biggest:

You can do more with mind work than defend against negative thinking.

A LOT more.

You can use your mind to create the race you want.

Read that again: getting out of your head or tuning the mind chatter out is only half of the picture. You can use your thoughts to create the results you want.

Let’s look at two runners - both equally fit, trained, and ready for a tough 100-mile race.

Both are worried they might not finish, so mind and body are the same in both runners.

Runner 1: Tries to think happy thoughts because she shouldn’t be thinking negative ones.

She spends a few moments thinking happy thoughts but in the back of her mind, she’s thinking “I’ve got to do everything right to have a chance at finishing.”

So she plans everything out to the nth degree, then worries about the things she could be missing, and feels overwhelmed.

In the race, she’s nervous about doing everything perfectly, so she sticks rigidly to her rules for eating and drinking, even when they start not working for her.

When she takes a wrong turn, she gets angry about how she went wrong, and panics about the time it will take to get back on course. It’s a disaster.

Eventually, her stomach gets upset. This wasn’t supposed to happen. So many things have gone wrong. She’s tired and discouraged, so she drops.

It wasn’t her day.

Runner 2: Changes her thinking.

At first she feels the same urge to get everything right…then sees how stressful and unhelpful that’s going to be. She mulls it over and decides it feels better believing she can figure things out, adapt however she needs to, and finish.

In the race, she’s enjoying the miles and ready for anything. She changes her eating and drinking pattern to work better in the hot race conditions.

When she takes a wrong turn, she doesn’t waste time or energy getting mad - just turns around to get back on course. Not great but nothing she can’t handle. She’ll keep doing her best.

Eventually, she’s tired but confident from the miles and obstacles she’s overcome. She goes on to finish like she knew she could.

She made it her day.

The ultra community is talking more about the power of mindset every day.

Most of the advice out there approaches it as a problem - how to get your mind out of the way. But that’s only half the story.

You can use your mind on the other end of the scale - to get the results you want.

I know because I’ve been using it that way for years, actually decades, of 100-milers.

You can do way more than tune out your thinking, cover it up with happy thoughts, or repeat a mantra you hope gets you past the lows to the finish line.

You can put your mind’s unrivaled power to your advantage.

I can help you do it.

Not just tips and advice. Teaching you how.
